“Trappist” is the kind of monk that we are, but it’s just a nickname for our more formal name of “Cistercians” which in turn comes from the town in France where we come from -Citeaux. Citeaux is in the region of Burgundy and so the Burgundy Wine Jelly connects us to our medieval roots.
Fr Robert was the director of the jelly factory for many years and people would urge him to drop the wine jellies because they were “un-American.” “Americans don’t eat wine jelly,” they would say. Fr Robert would respond, “No,we are keeping them. They are monastic and they connect us to who we are.” Come, prove those McCarthy-ites wrong and have a taste of monasticism with us.
